Roop Kund (4450m)

Roopkund is a mysterious lake at the altitude of (4450m) in the interior of Chamoli district of Uttaranchal. The lake is rather shallow having a depth of about 2 meters with the edge covered with snow for most part of the year. When the snow melts, human's unique skeleton remains can be seen, some of them with flesh attached.

These remains have been preserved in the alpine conditions for centuries. It is believed that these are the remains of about 300 people who died about 500-600 years ago. Some believe that they are the General Zorawar's Soldiers who died here in a vain attempt to conquer Tibet. There are many stories about these findings but none are satisfying.
